Occupational Therapist Case Manager
Alex completed his MSc Occupational Therapy qualifications in 2019 and started working for the NHS. Alex’s first role, between May 2019 and December 2021, was working as a band 5 Occupational Therapist (OT) for University Hospital North Midlands (UHNM) on the Acute Stroke ward. Within the first year Alex took on the role as Community Stroke Occupational Therapist in East Cheshire alongside his inpatient role. These were both adult service roles which enabled Alex to work within multiple MDT’s, building patient centred, effective discharge pathways for inpatients at UHNM and for outpatients in the community. This role encompassed completing complex assessments and interventions, cognitive assessments and equipment provisions, both at the Hyper Acute/ Acute stage of individuals stroke journey, all the way through to long term patient centred rehabilitation within individual’s homes. In both settings Alex worked with and supported a team of rehabilitation assistants to best meet clients needs as part of his role.
From December 2021 to September 2024 Alex progressed into a Band 6 role within Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) as a Specialist Neurological Occupational Therapist for adults. During this time Alex worked in a community-based setting, seeing clients in their own home who had a diagnosis of a progressive neurological condition. This service later developed and accepted clients with non-progressive neurological conditions. Alex further developed his complex assessment and intervention skills, as well as clinical knowledge of multiple neurological conditions and injuries. This role also enabled Alex to enhance his knowledge of more bespoke, specialist equipment through training and he also built in depth knowledge of posture management and seating during this time. There were many different OT skills required in this role, ranging from rehabilitation following relapses or traumatic brain injuries, maintenance of cognitive and physical abilities, all the way through to comfort and care management towards end of life. Alex supervised both rehabilitation assistants and newly qualified OT’s within this role, which included both 1 to 1 as well as group supervisions on a regular basis.
As an experienced Neuro Occupational Therapist Alex has a wealth of knowledge in the field of neuro-rehabilitation, equipment and adaptations. Alex is also experienced in managing rehabilitation Support Workers.
